Travel Information

TongaThings to Know

From cash essentials to cultural insights, discover vibrant Tonga.

Cash is crucial

Credit cards aren't widely accepted. Have Tongan Pa’anga in cash for most expenses. Only around 200 businesses take cards. ATMs are in the main towns. Learn more in "What is the Currency in Tonga?"

Timeframe tips

Tonga caters to all durations. In three days, explore Tongatapu; two weeks allow for four island groups. Check our Tonga itineraries for planning.

Transport variety

Tonga's travel is an experience. Scenic flights, cultural ferry rides, and even horseback rides.

Authentic stays

Tonga skips five-star resorts. Experience "next-level glamping" in beach huts or affordable guesthouses. Private villas are also an option. Browse Tonga Accommodation for stay ideas.

Endless activities

Beyond whale swimming, Tonga offers snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, crafting, historical sites, blowhole displays, and limestone caves.

Island dilemma

Picking an island group is tough. Tongatapu, Vava’u, Ha’apai, or The Niuas—each has its unique charm. Make sure to compare destinations to understand what suits you the best.

Feasts

Tongans love to feast. Experience grand buffets, umu feasts, and Tongan spreads.

Cultural awareness

Tonga is religious; wear respectful clothing outside resorts. Topless is illegal outside resorts on Sundays.

Intriguing facts

Fonuafo’ou: A disappearing island with a history of appearances and vanishings.

Heaviest Monarch: King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s heaviest monarch. He managed to lose about 40% of his weight and became a health role model for Tonga.

Tonga stands tall as the sole Pacific nation never colonized. In the 10th Century, Tongans explored their own form of colonization. Instead of yielding to British influence, the Tu’i Tonga (King of Tonga) established Tonga’s constitutional monarchy, with an unexpectedly helpful British reverend becoming the first prime minister.
