Take a trip to The Amazon on your Brazil Vacation
A very special place to visit on Brazil tours is the Amazon, a rainforest that stretches across nine countries. While the majority of the forest belongs to Brazil, it also covers areas of Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
It is believed that the forest has been in existence for at least fifty-five million years while archaeological evidence suggests that human habitation began around 11,000 years ago. The first European to embark on the Amazon was Spaniard Francisco de Orellana who travelled the length of the river in 1542. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Portuguese adventurers went further into the forest and the second half of the 20th century witnessed a massive campaign of Amazon colonization.
The Amazon stretches across 1.4 billion acres of dense forest encompassing half of the planet’s remaining tropical forests. It provides a refuge for endangered species and it is believed that one in ten of the world’s known species can be found in the rainforest. This diversity makes it a hub for ecotourism and the goal of such tourism is to help sustain the ecosystem as well as indigenous communities while providing constant wildlife viewing opportunities to be experienced on Brazil vacations.
