Take a trip to Alaska on your United States vacation.
This is one of the most awe-inspiring places in the world, home to magical fjords with ice-blue water and brilliant white glaciers, as well as Mt. McKinley, at 20,310 feet the tallest peak in North America.
Juneau, the state capital, is close to the Mendenhall Glacier, one of the top sights in the state. It’s also a great spot for a whale-watching tour in summer. Near Mendenhall Glacier is Nugget Falls, a picturesque waterfall. Try the Goldbelt Mount Roberts Tramway gondola for awesome views of Juneau, the Chilkat Mountain Range and surrounding waterways.
Skagway is a popular spot with cruise ship visitors and sits at the base of a steep valley that’s just a few km’s from British Columbia and southern Yukon. The wood-front shops and boutiques are fun to explore, and there are several good restaurants in town. If you get the chance, take the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, a narrow gauge train that hugs the sides of a steep canyon east of Skagway. It’s a truly spectacular journey.
Nome is a fine spot for exploring the Bering Strait, which separates Alaska from Russia. Check out the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum for a look at the fascinating history of the area.
