Insider Travel Tips

Portugal is one of Europe’s most welcoming destinations, blending old-world charm with modern conveniences. Its compact size, excellent infrastructure, and warm hospitality make it easy to explore, whether you’re navigating Lisbon’s cobbled streets or road-tripping through the Algarve. While the country is straightforward for most travellers, a few insider tips will help ensure your experience is smooth and stress-free.

“Portugal is one of Europe’s friendliest countries,” says Destination Specialist Josie Pileggi. “Everyone greets you with warmth, even if you don’t speak the language.”

Practical Information for Visiting Portugal

Visitors from Canada and the United States do not require a visa for stays under 90 days, making Portugal an accessible option for both short and extended vacations. The official currency is the euro, and while credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist hubs, carrying small amounts of cash is useful in rural areas and local markets.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; leaving five to 10 percent in restaurants or rounding up the bill for excellent service is customary. Portugal is a very safe country, with low crime rates, though common-sense precautions apply, particularly in crowded areas of Lisbon and Porto.

Driving is a great way to explore beyond major cities. Portugal’s highways are in good condition, and EU licenses are accepted. Do note that many toll roads require electronic payment. Electrical current runs on 230V using Type C and F plugs, so pack an adapter if needed.

“Download an offline map app like Google Maps or Maps.me before exploring rural areas,” says Destination Specialist Josie Pileggi. “It’s a lifesaver.”

Health and Safety in Portugal

Tap water across Portugal is safe to drink, however on the Islands, bottle or filtered water is recommended for a nicer taste.Pharmacies are also widely available for everyday health needs. Portugal offers modern medical facilities and high-quality care in urban centres. The number to dial for emergencies is 112.

Socially, Portugal is known for its warmth and inclusivity. Major cities like Lisbon and Porto are LGBTQ+ friendly, and travellers of all backgrounds are welcomed with genuine hospitality. Rural areas tend to be more traditional, so modest dress is appreciated in churches and small villages.

Seasonal Advice for Portugal

When you visit Portugal shapes the kind of experience you’ll have. Summer (June to August) brings lively festivals, warm beach weather, and bustling streets, which is perfect for those who enjoy vibrant energy, but is also the busiest season, especially in the Algarve and Lisbon.

Spring and fall are ideal for cultural explorers, offering mild weather, blooming landscapes, and fewer crowds. The autumn harvest in the Douro Valley is a must-see for wine lovers, while winter invites peaceful escapes in Lisbon, Porto, Madeira and the Azores.

Planning ahead is essential for peak events such as the Santo António and São João festivals in June, or for seasonal wine tours. For more seasonal insights, check out when to go and tailor your itinerary around what matters most to you.

Top Destinations for First-Time Travellers to Portugal

Start in Lisbon, a city that balances historic charm with modern energy. Wander Alfama’s winding lanes, visit Belém Tower, and enjoy a night of soulful fado music. Porto offers a slower pace along the Douro River, where you can pair port wine tastings with riverfront strolls. For relaxation, the Algarve is an iconic choice, boasting golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and hidden coves perfect for sunseekers and nature lovers.

Add a day trip to Sintra to see whimsical palaces like Pena Palace, surrounded by misty forests. If time allows, include Madeira, a subtropical paradise with lush gardens, scenic levada walks, and mild year-round weather.

Culture and Customs in Portugal

Portugal values courtesy and calmness in public spaces. When visiting churches or rural villages, modest dress is appreciated as a sign of respect for local mores. Greetings are warm but simple: handshakes in formal situations and cheek kisses among friends or acquaintances. A few polite words like “por favor” for please and “obrigado” or “obrigada” for thank you go a long way in making connections with locals.

Public behaviour tends to be quiet and respectful, particularly on public transportation and in religious settings. Travellers will find the culture welcoming, but showing sensitivity to local traditions enhances every interaction.

Food and Dining in Portugal

Portugal’s culinary scene is diverse, but seafood is central to many dishes, especially along the coast. If you have allergies, it’s important to communicate this clearly when dining. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are widely available in cities like Lisbon and Porto, with vegan and halal choices increasingly common in urban areas and tourist regions.

In rural destinations, menus lean toward traditional fare, so flexibility helps. Supermarkets often feature multilingual food labeling, making it easier to identify ingredients. We, three couples, all enjoyed our time in Peru, despite the small amount of time we had, and the fact one person had injury while on the cruise prior to arriving in Lima. We did want to experience Machu Picchu without spending as many days as others usually do, since we had been traveling prior to that already. Kajal at Goway was able to tailor a well packed three-day private tour for our small group of six. Every detail, from the moment we got off the cruise ship, to Cusco, to Machu Picchu, and back to Lima airport hotel, was well taken care of. Kajal was very efficient in helping with the requested itinerary, and in staying on desired budget, as well answered all questions in timely fashion. We were able to accomplish what we were not sure if possible, all thanks to Kajal at Goway. Our experience in Peru was very positive. We felt the tours organized by Goway had enabled us to have great and impressive exposure to Peruvian culture and important historical sights - all 31 hours in 3 days!!! Condor Travel in Peru took care of us every step of the way. Every person we came across was very courteous, willing, and helpful. Help was always there and questions answered quickly via Whatsapp. All in all a great and positive experience we would highly recommend.KM

Mary G. was an absolute pleasure to work with. I partner with Goway often for Europe and typically have my go to rep, so stepping outside of that for a New Zealand itinerary had me a little unsure at first. That hesitation quickly disappeared. Mary stepped in with confidence, handled all of my moving pieces with ease, and truly understood the level of detail I needed to take care of my clients. She delivered a beautifully curated itinerary that exceeded expectations, and most importantly, my clients had an incredible experience in New Zealand. I’m so grateful to have her as a resource and look forward to working together again.Nichole Pierce

Joanna was amazing!!! She was able to set up a ten day trip for me in Sydney in a matter of a couple of weeks. All accommodation and tours were amazing and the 24 hour help center was great and where able to call up the tour company and have them come and still pick be up when I had a mixup with the reservation. Would definitely recommend Goway to any friends and family and will definitely be using them again.Erica Wolff

I cannot sing Erin’s praises enough! She planned an action-packed two-week New Zealand itinerary that hit every single stop on our bucket list. Every experience was truly first-class and luxurious. While I found myself being price-conscious initially, once I saw the incredible quality of the experiences she curated, I knew it was going to be the trip of a lifetime. A huge thank you to Erin and Go Way Travel for making my 50th birthday so epic. We’ll definitely be reaching out for our next big adventure!Michelle

I booked this trip to Adelaide with Goway, after using them before when we explored the 'big' sites of Australia. This time, we went to Adelaide to go to three of the top wine growing areas for wine tastings. We were a small group of 4 people. It was made better as the vendor used Small Batch Wine Tours for all of our excursions. They were fantastic making us the only travelers on these tours. Matthew, the owner, even adjusted our wineries on the last day to go to different place. This place totally marked off everything we were looking for in wine. Ended up buying a couple of bottles. Between Goway setting it up and Small Batch Wine Tours running the actual tours we had a beautiful and seamless trip. not applicable

Land Package booked was for Bora Bora. The Goway Agent priced out 3 different resorts in the same area. Before making a final decision, she even obtained the menus at the Resort so the clients could decide if they wanted to purchase the 1/2 board meal package. With extreme patience, the agent obtained answers to all of our questions. It was so nice to have this package inclusive of all taxes and resort fees and to have a local agent meet the clients upon their arrival in PPT. EMD
