The transition from the heat of summer into the splendour of fall is a favourite for many across the Northern Hemisphere. The explosion of autumn colours and comforting sweater weather creates the perfect atmosphere to unwind and reflect on the seasons. It’s also the perfect time for a getaway.
Whether your dream is to hike through fiery fall foliage halfway across the world or you’re yearning for a spontaneous island-hopping adventure, autumn is the perfect season for travel. September to November is an ideal time to experience some of the world’s most classic and captivating destinations in ways you can’t the rest of the year, from smaller crowds and savings to cooler weather and one-of-a-kind experiences. These shoulder months offer plenty of rewards without sacrificing any unique experiences, from watching humpback whales in the heart of the Pacific to fall hikes off the coast of Korea.
With so many excellent countries to choose from, here are five of our favourite must-visit destinations this fall.
South Korea
What makes South Korea the perfect escape this time of year is its temperate weather and extraordinarily beautiful natural transformation throughout the country. Vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges cover the ground and trees throughout the country, creating a refreshing atmosphere you’ll never forget.
Marvel at the fall foliage surrounding the 15th-century Changdeokgung Palace, hike along Jeju Island’s cotton candy-like pink muhly, indulge in traditional South Korean jeon and crisp Korean pears, or stand below the hugging 400-year-old Zelkova at the intersection of the Bukhangang and Namhangang Rivers. The average fall temperatures in South Korea range from 5°C to 20°C / 41°F to 68°F. With minimal rainfall, fall is easily one of the best times for a trip to South Korea. Venture to Seoul and immerse yourself in Korean culture or embark into the heart of one of the country’s stunning national parks for the fall season like no other.
India
Fall in India is a beautiful combination of vibrant festivals, colourful falling leaves, cool weather, and enchanting cultural experiences. Autumn is an excellent opportunity to uncover India’s allure with fewer crowds and cooler, less humid weather, from the classics within the Golden Triangle to the serene backwaters of Kerala.
One of the most special experiences this time of year is exploring the Valley of Flowers National Park, a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uttarakhand. Framed by the imposing Himalayas, this incredible national park showcases a breathtaking collection of poppies, daisies, orchids, and more than 600 other exotic flower species. The park also hosts majestic snow leopards, brown bears, and musk deer.
Fall in India is also when the country comes alive celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights. The streets of Jaipur, Varanasi, Amritsar, and other cities dazzle with vibrant markets and exciting fireworks, creating a truly magical experience.
Fall also marks the harvesting period of the Kharif crops, also known as monsoon and autumn crops, making this a delicious time of year to enjoy classic and authentic Indian cuisine. Freshly harvested rice, maize, lentils, and millet elevate dishes like biryani, khichdi, and makki di roti to new levels. Don’t miss out on a chance to taste the beauty of India this fall.
Morocco
Morocco is an excellent year-round destination thanks to its incredibly diverse natural landscapes and rich culture, but visiting Morocco in the fall is simply extraordinary. Feel the wind along Morocco’s sunny coasts before tasting the fresh fruits ready for harvest scattered across the High Atlas Mountains and riding camels through the Sahara Desert. No matter what kind of globetrotter you are, you’re sure to create lifelong memories in Morocco with fewer crowds and more comfortable weather.
Navigate the ancient medinas of Fez and Marrakech, both incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites showcasing Morocco’s long and rich history, cultural diversity, and beautiful architecture from palaces, mosques, souks, and schools. Savour freshly harvested saffron in aromatic and delicious traditional Moroccan dishes, including tagines, and indulge in wine from Morocco’s five excellent wine regions. Immerse yourself in Morocco’s contemporary life as you explore the lively streets of Casablanca, weaving your way through modernist and Art Deco buildings to soft sand beaches along the coast.
Consider heading to Morocco this fall if you’re keen on strolling through ancient medinas, exploring world-class museums, wandering through the Sahara, and hiking through the Atlas Mountains.
New Zealand
New Zealand is the first country on our list where it’s spring instead of fall from September to November thanks to its cozy position south of the equator. This is great news for those who want to experience something completely different this time of year, from the weather and natural landscapes to festivals and food.
Beautiful gardens, valleys, and countryside come to life in September, creating a fresh and exciting atmosphere as you indulge in local cheese and wine while celebrating International Hobbit Day (September 22, 2024) at the home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Mild spring weather continues through October when you’ll enjoy comfortable hiking through New Zealand’s 13 national parks and captivating Fiordland, paddling across Lake Taupo, and attending the Taste of Auckland Festival, where you’ll enjoy a variety of Auckland’s signature dishes, craft beer, wine, and fresh produce.
The Islands of Tahiti (French Polynesia)
The best time to visit the tropical islands of French Polynesia is undoubtedly from September to October. While French Polynesia’s dry season occurs between May and October, September receives the least amount of rain and the longest days. But what makes the final three months of the dry season so special are your fellow marine globetrotters basking in the warm French Polynesian waters.
French Polynesia is home to one of the world’s largest whale and dolphin sanctuaries, with humpback whales migrating thousands of kilometres to mate and birth every July to November. French Polynesia is a mecca for whale watching, offering unforgettable experiences off the coast of Moorea, Rurutu, and Tahiti, where you’ll find yourself as close as possible to these titans of the sea. September is typically the most active month for birthing and an excellent time to witness newborn humpback calves swimming alongside their mothers.
Whether you’re embarking on an all-encompassing island-hopping adventure, a secluded romantic escape, an underwater diving experience, or an immersive cultural tour, French Polynesia is the ideal destination for your fall escape. Experience French Polynesian weather, wildlife, and atmosphere at its best from September to November.
Born to two parents who met travelling, Sael has always wanted to travel the world. Sael has hiked the Inca Trail in Peru, visited blue-footed boobies on the Galapagos Islands, stood on both hemispheres of the equator in Ecuador, climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, hiked the base of Uluru, surfed Pacific Ocean waves in Mexico, and skydived over the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns. Meeting new people and sharing stories are some of Sael's favourite parts of travelling, and he hopes he can help ignite this passion for discovery in others.
