Overview
Take a trip to Monument Valley on your United States vacation.
Sitting within Navajo Tribal Park, Monument Valley is one of this planet’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. The majestic terrain is dotted with stone buttes dramatically rising from the red desert and shining atop stone mesas. Every scene is a perfectly chiselled masterpiece, from graceful ripples in the sand to the tips of sandstone formations. At night, all you have to do is look up for a million-dollar view, where millions of shining stars appear in the dark sky, a sight as magical as the lands that surround you.
Your departure point is the 17-mile Tribal Park Loop, a scenic drive that brings you to some of the most photographed points in the Valley, including the Mitten Buttes, Merrick Butte, Three Sisters, Yei-bi-chai, North Window, and the famous Totem Pole. Each scene feels like something out of an old Western movie, minus tumbleweeds blowing across the landscape. Trek into the rugged terrain on the Wildcat Loop, one of the only self-guided hikes available in the area. Since the park sits on Navajo lands, going any further into the Valley must be done with a local guide, who can provide you with the region’s rich history and colorful backstories.
As you drive towards the visitor’s centre, Navajo artisans sell arts, crafts, food, and souvenirs lining the road into the beautiful park. Monument Valley itself is a bit more desolate than other national parks in Southern Utah, so come prepared as you explore the ancient lands.
