Overview
Take a trip to Bryce Canyon on your United States vacation.
A magical red rock wonderland carved by thousands of years of erosion, Bryce Canyon is America’s most breathtaking national park. Horseshoe-shaped red amphitheatres and spiralling rock pinnacles spread out in unforgettable geologic formations characterize this national treasure.
The dramatic terrain provides plenty of hiking opportunities, the most popular being the Queen’s Garden/Navajo Loop, following the rim of the canyon and then descending through the red spires. These “fairy chimneys” are best admired from Sunrise, Sunset, Inspiration, and Bryce Viewpoints, providing spectacular views over the red hoodoos and casting mysterious shadows depending on the time of day. A 38-mile scenic drive takes you through a number of notable attractions in the park, where you can snap photos to your heart’s content.
The clear air and high elevation of Bryce Canyon provide incredible stargazing as the sun slips beyond the red horizon, illuminating the dark sky with millions of twinkling lights. On nights with the clearest conditions, you can see all the way to the Andromeda Galaxy, which is 2.2 million lightyears away.
Just outside of the park, the towns of Bryce Canyon City and Tropic provide cozy lodgings and casual eateries to regenerate after a day of adventuring. About an hour away is the town of Escalante, a good base camp if you are also keen to explore the slotted canyons of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument or carry on to Capitol Reef.
