Overview
Take a trip to Manitoba on your Canada vacation.
Manitoba is Canada's fifth-most populous province and features a widely varied landscape, from arctic tundra and the Hudson Bay coastline in the north to boreal forest, huge freshwater lakes, and prairie grassland and farmland. The capital city is Winnipeg, which sits at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, near the longitudinal centre of North America. Manitoba contains more than 100,000 lakes, including Lake Winnipeg, one of the world’s largest inland bodies of fresh water. The province’s diverse, multicultural population has created a rich and varied history and cultural life, reflecting European, Asian and indigenous cultures. Visitors often start in Manitoba when exploring Canada’s three prairie provinces – it is fittingly named “The Gateway to the West.” The province is also known for outdoor sports, refined big-city culture, and as a base to explore Canada’s rugged North, including Churchill’s polar bear tours.
