Take a trip to Halifax on your Canada vacation.
Halifax is one of the great cities of Canada, complete with a wonderful waterfront, great restaurants and warm, welcoming locals. A walk along the harbour wall takes you past beautiful boats, top-notch restaurants and boutique shops, not to mention lively pubs.
Try a harbour tour on a sailing ship, or visit George’s Island, an old military installation that was closed for many years but recently reopened for public tours. The Citadel is an old British fortress on a hill that rises over downtown Halifax. You’ll often find soldiers in old-time military regalia. Downtown Halifax has great shopping on Spring Garden Avenue, as well as Argyle Street.
The Halifax Public Gardens are one of the best urban parks in the country, with stunning floral displays. The vibrant North End has become one of the most trendy parts of town, with cutting-edge restaurants, distilleries and several craft beer places. Dartmouth, which can be reached via a short ferry from downtown Halifax, also has become well-known for its shopping and restaurant scene.
Many Canadian immigrants made their first Canadian landfall in Halifax. Check out the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 to learn some of their stories. Fans of the movie “Titanic” will want to visit Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where more than 100 victims of the fateful sinking are buried. Just a few minutes from downtown, Lawrencetown Beach is a fabulous spot for surfing or a long walk on the sand.
