Overview
Take a trip to Sucre on your Bolivia vacation.
The constitutional capital of Bolivia, Sucre is found in the south-central part of the country. It is often considered one of Bolivia’s most beautiful cities and is the symbolic heart of the country, something to enjoy on a Bolivia vacation.
Sucre was founded in 1538 by the Spanish and was heavily influenced by Spanish culture and architecture during the colonial era. In 1809, the beginning of the Bolivian independence movement was signalled by the ringing of the bell of Sucre’s Basilica of Saint Francisco. Sucre has later named the capital of the newly independent Alto Peru (which would become Bolivia) in 1876. In 1825, South American revolutionaries arrived in the city and signed Bolivia’s declaration of independence and Sucre became the country’s capital.
