Discover Switzerland's alpine allure, perfect for summer hikes or winter thrills.

Switzerland is a prime destination for both summer and winter trips. Imagine waking up to the sound of cowbells and looking out in the morning at views of majestic mountain ranges and shimmering blue lakes. Switzerland has an extensive network of public transport, which will take you to all remote areas. Any time of year you’ll find alpine adventures abound. Summer is the perfect time to be anywhere in the country, when hiking is popular, the weather is temperate, and not too hot.

If you prefer a white look outside the window with snowy landscapes, winter is a joyful wonderland and there are lots of snowfalls from mid December until mid-April. Come in January and February for guaranteed perfect snow conditions. It’s a haven for skiers with numerous ski resorts to choose from. Davos/Klosters together is one of the largest and highest ski resorts in Europe. Davos is home to some sophisticated and upscale hotels and restaurants like the AlpenGold Hotel and Hotel Fluela. Davos, like most ski resorts across the country, comes complete with wellness centres and opportunities for post-exercise activities like relaxing in your best cozy clothes, or to head out for a fancy dinner.

When is Switzerland’s peak tourist season?

The summer months of June to September are busiest with travellers seeking ideal weather for hiking, biking and exploring. You’ll find there are many festivals and holiday celebrations worth checking out during the summer.

You will find fewer crowds during the shoulder season of April to June and late September to mid November. These months are not ideal hiking months, but great for city visits. As crowds subside in the fall, along with cooler temperatures, this is a great time to explore Switzerland as most village businesses are still open and fall foliage begins to appear.

Which is the most affordable time to visit Switzerland?

The lowest rates for flights and accommodation can be found February to May. The exception to this is the Alps during ski season, which are sought-after and fetch high rates. While weather during these months can be colder, packing accordingly will still ensure an excellent trip. Hiking is not widely available during the winter or early spring, due to trail maintenance. Accommodation rates will also generally be lower during the shoulder seasons of April to June and late September to mid October.

How long should I plan to visit Switzerland?

If you are interested in visiting the highlights of Switzerland, and most interested in city exploring, look to spend 7-10 days. This gives time for train travel between cities, and exploring each location for a couple days. If you are wanting to add in some hiking too, consider a trip length of 10-14 days to allow transport time for visiting more remote locations.

When is the ideal time to visit Switzerland?

Summer’s temperate weather is an ideal time for hiking anywhere in Switzerland, from the iconic Matterhorn to the hidden gems in Swiss National Park. Nearly half the population of Switzerland goes for a hike on a regular basis, making hiking Switzerland’s favourite sporting activity. There are over 40,000 miles (65,000 kilometers) of waymarked trails stretching to each corner of the country waiting for you to explore them. Switzerland is known for its variable weather, especially in the Swiss Alps where it can be harsh, switching from warm sun to cold wind quickly. When packing to hike, selecting layers including a waterproof shell and a packable down jacket is important. Bringing sturdy hiking shoes with a treaded sole and up to date maps is also essential.

If looking to do a ski vacation, from mid December to mid April, plan to visit one of the numerous Swiss resorts. There are over 185 miles (300 kilometers) of ski runs to be found at Davos Klosters. For those interested in visiting the historical home of the Winter Olympics, St. Moritz is a must visit, nestled in the Engadin valley. The ski jump and slopes are frequently the sites of world ski events, and those of all skiing levels and abilities will feel comfortable here. Also check out the skating rinks, tobogganing, Nordic skiing, and bobsledding available. The best snow can be found in January and February.
