Take a trip to Geiranger on your Norway vacation.
Geiranger is a small village in Sunnmore in the western part of Norway. It is situated at the head of the Geirangerfjord. The nearest city is Alesund. This is the third largest cruise ship port in Norway, especially in the summer months. The scenery here is absolutely spectacular.
The UNESCO World Heritage listed Geirangerfjord is 15 kilometres/9.3 miles long and one of the most visited tourist sites in Norway. It is surrounded by some of the steepest mountains on the west coast of Norway, the fjord is 260 metres/ 845 feet deep and surround by mountains as high as 1700 metres/5525 feet. It is very narrow and has no habitable shore area due to the sheer sides of the fjord which rise straight out of the water. Foaming waterfalls plunge into the fjord from jagged peaks. These include the impressive waterfall, Seven Sisters Falls and the Suitor (also called the Friar). The two waterfalls face each other across the fjord and the Suitor is said to be trying to woo the Sisters opposite.
