Overview
Take a trip to Kaunas on your Lithuania vacation.
Kaunas is Lithuania’s second-largest city and offers visitors on a Lithuania vacation many reasons to explore its treasures. Its Old Town was built in the 17th Century in the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles and is well worth exploring. An outstanding landmark is Kaunas Castle which dates back to the 14th Century and is the oldest building in Lithuania. The castle houses an interesting art gallery. Another landmark is Kaunas City Hall dating back to the 16th Century. Its cellar houses the Kaunas Ceramics Museum. Immediately outside is City Hall Square which is the city’s main square and offers an assortment of restaurants, bars, cafes, museums and art galleries.
Laisves Aleja is the city’s famous walking street, 2 kilometres/ 1.2 miles long offering a selection of shops, banks, supermarkets, restaurants, casinos and nightlife.
Kaunas is not without its cultural venues when on a Lithuanian vacation. There is the Communications Historical Museum with its exhibition of developments of post and communications, the Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological Museum with its collection of stuffed and preserved animals, the Vytautas Great War Museum with its history of Kaunas and of the World Wars, the Devil’s Museum with its sculptures and carvings of devils from around the world and Napoleon’s House in which he lived for a short time.
Another interesting venue is the Catacombs at the Church of St. Michael the Archangel. For panoramic views of Kaunas, one can take two funicular railways to the top of local hills.
