Take a trip to Sistine Chapel on your Italy Vacation
The Sistine Chapel is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the pope in Vatican City. Built between 1473 and 1481, it is a place for both religious and functional papal activity. The papal conclave, where a new pope is selected, takes place in the chapel.
The chapel is famous mainly for its frescoes, notably the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment, painted by Michelangelo. The ceiling depicts nine stories from Genesis, including the well-known "Creation of Adam." The Last Judgment fresco on the west wall was created for Pope Paul III. The two frescoes are counted among the finest achievements of Western painting. The chapel is located within the Vatican Museums. Stroll the various galleries, including Pigna Courtyard, Pius Clementino Museum, Candelabra Gallery, Tapestries Gallery, and Raphael’s Rooms.
The use of mobile phones is forbidden inside the chapel. If you're interested in gaining more insights about the chapel, consider hiring a guide.
