Overview
Take a Trip to Naples on your Italy Vacation
Naples is the third most populated city in Italy and Southern Italy's largest. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word and city Neapolis, meaning new city. It is a lively and vibrant city, full of historical and artistic treasures and narrow, winding streets lined with small shops. It sits on the northern edge of the Bay of Naples, one of the most beautiful bays in Italy, and its harbour is one of the most beautiful and busiest ports in Southern Italy.
Its historic centre has earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination, and it is one of the largest historical city centres in the world. Its narrow alleyways will take you to several churches, catacombs, underground caves, and museums, including the renowned National Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the world’s best collections of Graeco-Roman artifacts. Naples has a total of 448 historical churches. The main city square, or piazza, is the Piazza del Plebiscito, bound on the east by the Royal Palace and on the west by the church of San Francesco di Paola. Nearby is the Teatro di San Carlo, the oldest opera house in Italy. Naples also holds the record as the city with the third-most castles in the world, including Castel Sant'Elmo, Castel dell'Ovo, and Castel Nuovo, all of which offer their own unique historical heritage and beautiful coastal views.
