Take a trip to Milan on your Italy Vacation
Milan is more than a financial, commercial, and industrial centre. It is a historical fashion, design, and trade fair hub. Milan, Italy’s second-most populated city, is a dynamic metropolis with much in the way of cultural attractions, excellent museums, great food and dining, and outstanding architectural gems for you to discover.
Milan was once a floating city similar to Venice or Amsterdam, with the famed Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese canals cutting through the historic Navigli neighbourhood, established as early as 1179. Milan built the waterways to transport goods from nearby lakes, including precious Candoglia marble used to construct the Milan Cathedral, also known as the Duomo. The Duomo is the world's fifth-largest and Italy's second-largest cathedral, and the hundreds of white marble spires and thousands of statues on the Gothic cathedral's exterior, dating back to the 14th century, will immediately impress you. You can enjoy spectacular city views from the rooftop, and on a clear day, you can see as far as the Swiss Alps. The Duomo Museum contains around 200 articles, including statues, tapestries, terracotta models, paintings, and stained-glass windows.
The Piazza del Duomo, Milan’s most important square, contains more than just the cathedral. There is the Royal Palace, an impressive 18th-century building, and several excellent shops, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy. You must also visit the Teatro alla Scala, one of Europe's largest opera houses and one of the most famous in the world, and the iconic Last Supper painting in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, one of Leonardo DaVinci's most famous paintings, depicting Christ's last meal with his disciples before his betrayal.
