Take a trip to Mykonos on your Greece Vacation
Mykonos belongs to the Cyclades group of Greek islands and is much more than a fun place with a vibrant nightlife and excellent beaches. The main town of Mykonos, also known as Chora, is a picturesque maze of narrow streets and a harbour area. The streets are full of shops, boutiques, art galleries, cafes, bars and restaurants, and you will pass by white-washed houses with colourful doors and window frames, bougainvillea trees in bloom and hidden churches as you stroll through the narrow streets.
In town, the Panagia Paraportiani is an impressive Byzantine-style church dating back to 1425. There are several good museums in Mykonos, including the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Aegean Maritime Museum, and the Agricultural Museum. The pedestrian shopping streets of Chora are always busy, and the most glamorous of all is Matoyanni Street, lined with brand-name stores, charming cafés and stylish restaurants.
One of the most scenic parts of Mykonos is Alefkantra or Little Venice, an 18th-century district dominated by mansions with colourful balconies and stylish windows. Little Venice is known for its picturesque medieval houses, literally hanging over the sea's edge. The sunsets here are renowned, and an excellent time to rest with your favourite beverage while the sun goes down. Relax at a waterfront café and admire the view of the quaint windmills standing imposingly on the hillside above, set against a luminous blue backdrop. The Venetians built these windmills in the 16th century to mill flour. Today, they’re an iconic site of Mykonos.
