Take a trip to Delphi on your Greece Vacation
Delphi, an iconic gem of ancient Greece, beckons travellers to explore its captivating history and spiritual significance. Perched on the southwest slope of the majestic Mount Parnassus in Central Greece, Delphi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Greece's most renowned archaeological treasure trove.
Ancients celebrated Delphi throughout antiquity as the dwelling of an oracle, and it held a special place in the hearts of Greeks, who believed it to be the centre of their known world. Every four years, commencing in 776 BC, the Pythian Games were held here, an early precursor of the modern Olympic games.
At the heart of Delphi, the Sanctuary of Apollo emerges from the mists of time. The Doric temple, constructed between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, with porous stone and limestone columns, speaks eloquently of its storied past. Nearby, the Tholos, a remarkable circular structure from the 4th century BC, boasts 20 Doric columns on its graceful exterior.
The ancient theatre of Delphi accommodated up to 5,000 spectators, who revelled in dramatic performances, poetry recitals, and musical interludes. As you meander through the ruins, you'll encounter the Athenian Treasury, a marvel crafted entirely from marble. This treasury housed countless offerings to the Delphic oracle, tokens of gratitude for victories won. The well-preserved large stadium, built in the 5th century BC, once resounded with the thunder of chariot races and cheers from around 6,500 spectators and hosted athletic contests and music festivals, captivating the ancients.
