Mont Saint-Michel

Mont-Saint Michel is a tidal island located off the coast of Normandy. It is most famous for its medieval abbey, a Gothic marvel that rises from the bay and forms a striking silhouette against the sky. Built in the 8th century, the abbey, once a site of pilgrimage, prison, and a fortress, has stood the test of time and solidified its status as one of France's most visited attractions. At the base of the island is a fortified village whose main street, the La Grand Rue, is filled with shops and restaurants.

A remarkable feature of the abbey is its 13th-century cloister, a three-tiered structure reaching a height of nearly 115 ft (35 m). The abbey is divided into different parts. Its Gothic part was a former residence of monks. A church atop the mount features architecture from different periods in time. Eglise Paroissiale Saint-Pierre, a small 15th-century church, is notable for the sculpture of Michel and stunning stained-glass windows. The island is a four-hour drive from Paris. Shuttle buses run daily between the two locations. Once here, travellers may go directly to the abbey or stroll the La Grand Rue first. The abbey is open for nocturnal visits from 7 pm till midnight during the summers.
