Like Rome, Plovdiv is built on seven hills and is known as Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city. This second biggest city of Bulgaria is full of 19th century mansions that are now museums, galleries and guesthouses. In 1972, it was discovered there was a Roman amphitheatre under the city. Bult is the 2nd century, it now hosts large scale events and concerts. If you ever have the chance to hear the heavenly Bulgarian State Television Female Choir singing there, you may be transported spiritually, and you will not be disappointed.
Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia is a major landmark, and one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. It also serves as a memorial to 200,000 Russian soldiers who died liberating Bulgaria from Turkey in the 17th century. It features 53 bells, the heaviest at 10 tons, holds 10,000 people and is decorated with Italian marble, murals, chandeliers, and thrones.
Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital, is now a quiet town with beautiful castles and monasteries to explore. Tsarevets Fortress, an old walled city with cobblestone streets and fortified walls, dominates the skyline, dating from the 12th century, has the remains of more than 400 houses, 18 churches, a royal palace and an execution rock.
Belogradchik Rocks are huge 200 metre sandstone and limestone rock formations sculpted by wind and rain and erosion over millions of years on the slopes of the Bulkan Mountains.
Bulgaria is relatively inexpensive, and your dollar will go a long way. Bulgaria is known for quality, natural, (very few chemicals) farm fresh, and tasty vegetables and dairy products. Many people grow at least some fruits, vegetables, and herbs, and pork and chicken are popular. Grilling is the favoured method of cooking.
The currency is the Bulgarian Lev, not the Euro. The drinking age in Bulgaria is 18. Tipping is expected but servers are not dependent on tips, so 10% is acceptable.
