The following list is of 15 must-add experiences to any Sydney itinerary. Luckily, most of them are in Sydney's central business district, meaning you could easily combine a few of the following ideas.
1. Take a Private Sydney Harbour Boat Cruise
Nothing will set the stage for a few exciting days in Sydney better than sailing past the Opera House with a glass of Australian wine in hand – Welcome to Sydney.
2. Tour The Rocks
Do a private tour through the historic Rocks area, one of the oldest neighbourhoods and adjacent to the Harbour Bridge. Afterwards, having gained a sense of where you are, explore the Rock’s many art galleries and boutique shops.
3. Learn to Surf
Take a half-day private surf lesson on Sydney’s legendary Bondi Beach.
4. Embrace Sydney’s Beach Culture
Spend the whole day at one of the many iconic beaches like Bondi, Manly, Coogee, and many more. Depending on your interests, swimming ability, and location, it is hard to say which Sydney beach is best, but Tamarama (be aware that it has a strong riptide and is not the best option for swimming, but it is famous with surfers and absolutely beautiful) and Balmoral Beach (a quiet and beautiful option near Taronga Zoo with good views and family-friendly) are two of the less crowded options.
5. Go on a Bike Tour
Explore the gorgeous Circular Quay and Darling Harbour on a private Sydney bicycle tour.
6. Enjoy the Coffee
Have a flat white, tall black, or whichever way you like your European-style coffee! Sydney is a city that screams coffee culture, with Café Two Black Sheep, on 580 George St, right downtown, absolutely worth the visit.
7. Go Window Shopping
Take in the Romanesque Revival architecture in the Queen Victoria Building (built in the 1890s and now home to the city’s most upscale shops). Indulge in the high-quality multi-ethnic cuisine in the mall food court here for a quick and delicious culinary journey with delicacies like the legendary Australian meat pie with Indian butter-chicken curry filling!
8. Go for a Coastal Walk
After a healthy Sydney breakfast of fresh fruit, avocadoes, and incredible coffee, work up an appetite for a seafood lunch by embarking on one of several beautiful coastal walks. There are magnificent views along the Bondi to Coogee Beach Coastal walk (just under 3 mi [6 km]), with well-marked, well-maintained trails. Finish your excursion by trying the champagne version of fish and chips: Barra’ and Chips, a local Barramundi seafood delicacy.
9. Take some Dawn Photos
Photographers know catching the early morning light is a no-brainer, so wake up early and head straight to Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair (near the Royal Botanic Gardens) for the best view of the Opera House and sailboats in the Harbour. It’s a must on all Australian tours.
10. Go Behind the Scenes at Sydney Wildlife World
Join the Behind-the-Scenes VIP small group tour at the Sydney Wildlife World, where you'll do much more than wander! Get up close and personal with many kinds of Australian wildlife, including cuddling the iconic Aussie koala.
11. Have a gourmet picnic in Hyde Park
This green oasis in the centre of Sydney’s central business district, conveniently near everything. The Sydney Picnic Company can prepare the perfect basket of fine foods (think European cheeses, a charcuterie board, stuffed olives and artisanal bread), and they will even deliver it to your hotel!
12. Enjoy the Local Beer
Have a schooner (small beer glass) at one of the many historic pubs or fantastic patios you'll find anywhere downtown. Try the Lord Nelson Brewery Pub & Hotel in the Rocks for phenomenal brews in an original Sydney setting.
13. Try Aussie Wines
Sample great Australian Wine at Wine Odyssey Australia, where a wine-tasting arrangement can include 44 wines (in 25ml samples)! This odyssey is an underrated wine-drinkers sanctuary, with a high-quality wine list of 120 different wines and a store with over 300 wines, mostly Australian. This experience would easily combine with your Rock’s area private tour and art gallery pursuit since it's on Argyle Street in the Rocks.
14. See the City from the Sky
Consider a flight over Sydney Harbour on a seaplane for the cherry on top experience!
15. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge
The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is not only great fun and good exercise, but you’ll get the most incredible views (and photographs) of Sydney!
