Phanthiet

Overview

Take a trip to Phanthiet on your Vietnam vacation.

For anyone on a Vietnam vacation, consider a visit to Phan Thiet, a fishing village and beach resort located in Southeastern Vietnam, approximately 200 km (120 mi) northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Phan Thiet is the capital of BÏnh Thuan province and houses all the province’s government offices.

Located along the shores of the South China Sea, Phan Thiet is one of Vietnam’s most important fishing villages and is well known for its fish sauce.

With Phan Thiet River running through the city centre, visitors are immediately struck by the hundreds of colourfully-painted fishing vessels in the harbour. During the colonial period, Europeans occupied the northern banks of the river, while the southern banks were inhabited by the Vietnamese, Southern Chinese, Malays, Indonesians, and Chams, who controlled the area until 1692. Phan Thiet was also briefly inhabited by Ho Chi Minh, while he worked as a schoolteacher.

During the Vietnam War, Phan Thiet was the site of the US military base known as Landing Zone Betty - an airfield located southwest of the city, now closed.

Although the fishing communities remain relatively unchanged, Phan Thiet is rapidly developing resort-style accommodations for Vietnam tour packages. Mui Ne Beach District, one of 18 of Phan Thiet’s urban wards, is fast becoming a resort destination. Mui Ne’s long beach features pristine white sands and is great for walks or enjoying spectacular sunsets.

Just outside of Mui Ne are the Red and White Sand Dunes. A geological phenomenon of Vietnam, both dunes are a major highlight of the area. The Red Dunes found closer to Mui Ne, are made up of reddish-brown sand, making it ideal for photography. The White Dunes, also known as White Lake, are significantly bigger than the Red Dunes and feature a nearby lake, Lotus Lake. Gorgeous lotus flowers can be found as well as a row of pine trees, offering plenty of shade. One of the biggest features of both these sites is sledding, where visitors can rent a sled and slide down the sandy slopes. Thrill seekers at the White Dunes can rent dune buggies and ATVs on Vietnam vacation packages.
