Overview
Take a trip to Hoi An on your Vietnam Vacation
Hoi An is a city situated on the central coast of Vietnam. Located just south of Danang, in the province of Quang Nam, Hoi An’s Old Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, definitely to be visited on a Vietnam vacation.
Hoi An’s history goes back 2000 years, as it possessed the largest harbour in Southeast Asia in the 1st century. A significant part of the Cham Kingdom, which controlled the strategic spice trade with Indonesia from the 7th to the 10th centuries, Hoi An was then a major international trading port from the 15th to 19th centuries, attracting Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, and Indian traders to settle in the area. Known as Hai Pho, or Faifo to Western traders, the city featured a prominent Japanese settlement, found across the infamous Japanese Bridge.
Hoi An’s Old Town has preserved its buildings very well. Foreign and indigenous influences can be seen in their architecture, reflecting a time in its history when Hoi An played an important role in foreign trading. With a major shipping business now moved to nearby Danang, Hoi An acts primarily as a major tourist attraction on Vietnam tour packages.
With hotels and restaurants constructed in and around Hoi An, the busiest street in the Old Town, Tran Phu Street, features quaint shops and restaurants, all catering to the tourism industry. Visitors on a Vietnam vacation can find many places to buy crafts, ceramics, and textiles.
Featuring small museums and galleries, Hoi An also offers visitors a chance to enjoy various water and land activities such as kayaking, cycling, hiking, and sailing, while some restaurants offer cooking lessons.
