Ho Chi Minh City

Overview

Take a trip to Ho Chi Minh City on your Vietnam vacation.

When on a Vietnam vacation, one must visit Ho Chi Minh City, previously named Saigon, Vietnam’s largest city, which is located in the country’s south region. Situated on the banks of the Saigon River, Ho Chi Minh has located 1760 km (1090 mi) south of Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital.

While under the name Saigon, the city was the capital of the French colony, Cochin-china, later becoming the capital of the Republic of South Vietnam, from 1955-75. Ho Chi Minh City, named after communist revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh, acquired its name in 1976, after joining with the province of Gia Dinh and two suburban districts of two other nearby provinces. This occurred one year after Vietnam’s communist north captured Saigon during the Vietnam War, on April 30, 1975, also known as the Fall of Saigon.

Ho Chi Minh City is still unofficially known as Saigon to many locals and foreigners, mostly referring to the city’s central area, District 1. Featuring wide boulevards and French colonial architecture, including the cathedral Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, the adjacent Saigon Central Post Office, and the famous Rex Hotel, District 1 is home to many tourist attractions on Vietnam vacation packages.

Museums

Reunification Palace is Ho Chi Minh’s most prominent landmark. This distinct structure was built in the 1960s, served as the residence and workplace to the former president of South Vietnam, and then symbolized the Fall of Saigon, on April 30, 1975, as enemy tanks crashed through its gates, declaring victory over the Vietnam War.

There are many museums to visit on Vietnam tour packages, including the War Remnants Museum, which exhibits various war relics, fighter aircraft, and shocking imagery of the Vietnam War. Northwest of the city in the Cu Chi district, the Cu Chi Tunnels offer a glimpse into an immense network of underground tunnels, as they served as hiding spots for the north’s Viet Cong guerillas.
