Koh Lanta

Overview

Take a trip to Koh Lanta on your Thailand vacation.

Koh Lanta is an island located a one-hour boat ride from Krabi off the Andaman Coast in Southern Thailand. Actually, it is made up of several small islands. The most popular Thailand vacations are Koh Lanta Yai which has nature reserves and excellent beaches where the water is calm and safe and Koh Lanta Noi. Koh Lanta Yai is the best-known and d where most of the action is. Koh Lanta Yai is 30 kilometres/19 miles long and 6 kilometres/3.6 miles wide. It has something for everyone – white sand beaches, world-class scuba diving, kayaking, fishing and. The coastline is dotted with more than 70 small islands and forests, coral reefs and underwater life. The scenery is stunning. A paved road runs along the beaches from the northern part of the island almost all the way to the southern tip. The landscape is dominated by a series of mountains covered with virgin rainforests. Lanta Old Town is a small village on Koh Lanta Yai's east side. It is culturally diverse with Chinese merchants, original Thai fishing families and an ancient Sea Gypsy community. It once acted as the port and commercial centre for the island. It is a charming place to visit and has many good restaurants and interesting shopping. Koh Lanta Noi has no tourist facilities but is well worth visiting. There are a few circular roads, all well-covered, that will take you around the island to view the local way of life.

There are no scuba diving sites on the island itself and so, it is necessary to take a boat ride to islands on Thailand tours such as Hin Daeng, Hin Muang and Koh Haa, all popular with divers. These are some of the best dive sites in Thailand due to the coral and plentiful reef fish.

Other places of interest include Khao Mai Kaew Caves located in the centre of the island with rocks and caverns with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. Some of the caves are huge and one of them contains a pool. The Orchid nursery farm is recommended to anyone liking flowers. The Sea-Gypsy Village has been occupied by sea gypsies for hundreds of years settling along the coast in stilt-built houses. They are unique as they rarely mix with the general population, speak their language and have their very own supernatural and traditional beliefs and rituals.
