Kenting National Park

Overview

Take a trip to Kenting National Park on your Taiwan vacation.

An interesting destination for Taiwan vacations is Kenting National Park, Taiwan’s oldest national park. Situated on the Hengchun Peninsula, the park covers the southernmost region of Taiwan.

Covering 181 sq km (70 sq miles) of land, Kenting National Park is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Taiwan Strait to the west, and the Luzon Strait to the south.

Kenting National Park was established on January 1, 1984. Seven years previous, Taiwan’s premier at the time, late President Chiang Jing-Guo, instructed that "preservation of natural resources and the ecosystem must be taken into consideration during construction practices; plans should be made to establish a national park in Kenting area". In 1979, an ecological survey conducted by the National Taiwan University and under the authorization of the Ministry of the Interior was administered, and the project for Kenting National Park came into effect on September 1, 1982.

Divided by the narrow Hengchun Longitudinal Valley Plain, which runs north to south, Kenting National Park features coral reefs along the west coast, a number of mountains in the north, and coral tablelands and foothills in the south. The east side features a vast lake called Longlyuantan, along with coral tablelands and limestone caves, all to be experienced on a Taiwan vacation.

A famous landmark of Kenting National Park is the Eluanbi Lighthouse, which stands 21.4 metres (70 ft) high. Located near the southernmost tip of Taiwan, in Eluanbi Park, this lighthouse was completed in 1883, and is one of the few fortified lighthouses around the world, as it was attacked by local tribesmen during construction.

Only 90 km (56 mi) from Kaohsiung, Kenting National Park offers visitors on Taiwan vacation packages an opportunity to enjoy various water activities, go-karting, hiking, shopping, dining, and relaxation. Well known for its tropical climate and sunshine, scenic mountains, beaches, and plenty of flora and fauna, Kenting National Park is a beautiful place to explore.
