Take a trip to Langkawi Island on your Malaysia Vacation
If looking for a special beach stay, on a Malaysia vacation, officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi Island is an archipelago, comprising 99 islands (with an extra 5 islands being revealed during low tide), situated in the Andaman Sea. Located in the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border, Langkawi Island is located 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia, separated by the Straits of Malacca.
With a total land mass of 47,848 hectares, the main island of Langkawi (or Pulau Langkawi) itself measures 32,000 hectares, spanning 25 km north to south and a few more km east to west. While two-thirds of the island is dominated by forest-covered mountains, hills, and natural vegetation, its coastal areas consist of flat, alluvial plains, accented by limestone ridges.
Langkawi Island features two island areas. The Southern Islands, with a high tourist population, feature white sand beaches, watersports, bars, and restaurants, while the islands to the northeast are more secluded.
The Langkawi Cable Car takes visitors on a Malaysia tour up to the peak of Gunung Mat Chinchang, where the Langkawi Sky Bridge is located.
In 2007, Langkawi Island was given World Geopark status by UNESCO, as demonstrated by its lush vegetation, and exotic flora and fauna.
