Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple

Located on a cliff top 230 ft (70 m) above the Indian Ocean, Uluwatu Temple is a Balinese Hindu temple and one of the six holiest places of worship in Bali. It was built during the 11th century by the Javanese sage Mpu Kuturan, who introduced Hinduism to Bali, and erected near a natural spring, which was said to have magical healing powers. The temple is believed to be the dwelling of Rudra, the god of the elements.

Entry inside the pagoda is forbidden. You can view it from the outside while walking along the cliffs. The sun sets right in front of the temple, making for gorgeous sunset views. The Kecak fire dance takes place beside the temple every evening at sunset. Performed by a large group of men, it depicts stories from the important Hindu epic, the Ramayana. You can purchase tickets at the temple's entrance. Mornings are cooler and quieter due to the smaller crowds. Guided tours are available for those who wish to learn about the history of Uluwatu Temple.
