Take a trip to Swakopmund on your Namibia vacation.
Swakopmund is a beach resort city found off the northwestern coast of the country, perfect after a Namibia safari. It is the country’s largest coastal city and is often referred to as “Namibia’s Playground” serving as one of the country’s most popular holiday destinations.
The city was originally founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South Africa. Chosen for the availability of fresh water, Swakopmund quickly became an important trading port for the whole territory. Following the First World War, harbour activities were transferred to Walvis Bay causing a major economic blow for the city. As time passed, the potential for a holiday destination was recognized and after the development of a uranium mine in 1976, the city began to expand and prospered.
