Hoover Dam
When discussing the most iconic engineering marvels in the world, Hoover Dam is near the top of the list. Hoover Dam was built in 1931 to control the flooding along the Colorado River and provide irrigation water to surrounding areas. It's also notable for its Art Deco architectural design, a style characterized by geometric shapes, bold lines, and stylized ornamentation. The dam also houses a hydroelectric power plant, which produces 2000 megawatts of electricity, fulfilling the energy needs of several states in the southwestern US.
Take a guided tour of the dam to learn about its construction and history. Walk across the top of the dam to witness breathtaking views of the Colorado River. When visiting Hoover Dam, consider arriving early to avoid parking troubles and follow safety precautions when walking along the edge of the dam.
