Overview
Take a trip to Armenia on your Colombia vacation.
Nestled between a valley and one of the highest parts of the Cordillera Central, Armenia is the capital city of Colombia’s Department of Quindío.
The city was established by Spanish explorer Jesús María Ocampo in October 1889. Initially used as a trading centre, Ocampo later sold the land to allow for the development of a settlement. Just six months after it was founded, Armenia hosted a population of one hundred people. The city enjoyed great prosperity and expansion becoming the centre of the region’s coffee trade.
Today, Armenia’s economy is based on the same products that originally made it flourish: coffee, plantains and bananas. The northern part of the city serves as the gateway to Los Nevados National Park which hosts peaks that rise to more than 4,500 m (14763.78 ft) and are some of the highest in central Colombia.
Armenia is also close to the Colombian National Coffee Park, a theme park with various attractions all celebrating the coffee growing process which has made the region famous.
