Lima, Amazon Jungle Lodge & Machu Picchu

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,945

FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: Get back to nature and discover the wonders of the Amazon and Machu Picchu on this jungle and mountain combination. Begin with a brief stop in Lima to explore the capital before connecting to the Peruvian Amazon to spot an incredible range of wildlife. Later, visit the Sacred Valley, and then cap off your adventure by exploring spectacular Machu Picchu.

This 10-day Peru vacation takes you to the Amazon rainforest and Machu Picchu, as well as the cities of Lima and Cusco. It features moderate accommodations and a mix of private and shared tours.

Your trip to Peru begins in Lima, the Peruvian capital, where you’ll explore the trendy districts of Miraflores and Barranco on a cycling tour. Ride your bike along the green coastal cliffs of Miraflores and visit the Gaudi-inspired Parque del Amor before you continue to Barranco, the bohemian heart of the city that’s awash with art galleries, cafes, and an undeniably eclectic atmosphere. That afternoon, connect to the Larco Museum, home to the world’s greatest collection of pre-Columbian ceramics, including a cheeky erotic collection.

Fly north from Lima and connect to Puerto Maldonado, where you’ll board a boat and head up the Rio Tambopata to the Indigenous community of Infierno and eventually Posada Amazonas Lodge, your home for the next 3 nights. Posada Amazonas Lodge is located on a private 2,000ha communal reserve that supports community efforts while also providing comfortable accommodations. After a briefing at the lodge, you’ll head out on your first Amazon excursion. Get your bearings and enjoy a spectacular view 30m above the forest floor as you share the jungle canopy with toucans, parrots, and macaws.

The next day, venture to Tres Chimbadas to see giant river otters as well as caiman and distinctive birds like hoatzin and horned screamers. If you’re a birdwatcher, you’ll enjoy a visit to a macaw clay lick to watch a feeding frenzy of tropical birds. After lunch, venture down the river to Centro Nape, a community organization dedicated to making medicines from forest plants. That evening after dinner, you can choose to hike into the jungle to see nocturnal animals that come to life when the sun sets. You’ll have another day of jungle excursions before you connect back to Puerto Maldonado and fly on to Cusco.

Spend a night in the former capital of the Inca Empire before boarding the Expedition Train to Aguas Calientes, located at the foot of Machu Picchu. Ride the bus up the mountain and explore the iconic Lost Citadel of the Incas. Hear stories about the construction and abandonment of this famous mountaintop citadel and soak in the breathtaking views of surrounding snow-capped mountains and cloud-draped valleys. The next morning, ride the Vistadome train back to Cusco, enjoying panoramic views of the Sacred Valley en route.

After a final night in Cusco, you’ll connect to the airport for onward travels.

Lima City Tour with Larco Museum

Today you will learn about the two characters of Lima: the modern one, reflected in the districts of Miraflores and San Isidro; and the historic one, encapsulated in its historic center declared a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Along the tour through different districts of the city, you will see how the old and the modern coexist in buildings such as the Museum of Italian Art, Palace of Justice, Museum of Lima, Plaza San Martín, among others. With your tour guide leading the way and like-minded travellers alongside, you'll explore the center of Lima on foot, with the Main Square as the focal point: a beautiful colonial square worthy of photographs, surrounded by emblematic buildings such as the Government Palace, the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace. You will also have the opportunity to enter one of the most iconic ecclesiastical spaces in Lima, the Convent of Santo Domingo, also declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and where the relics of three Peruvian saints are found: Santa Rosa de Lima, San Martín de Porres and San Juan Macías. The tour would not be complete without a visit to the Rafael Larco Herrera Museum, one of the most important in the country, exhibiting a valuable collection of almost 45,000 pieces of pre-Hispanic cultures, especially the Mochicas. Marvel at the quality of its pieces of jewelry, textiles and its enigmatic erotic room, dedicated to ceramics alluding to fertility, and after exploring the museum, you will be returned to your hotel.
