Goway Celebrates the Year of the Gorilla

gorillaTo celebrate 2009 being the UN year of the Gorilla, Goway’s AFRICAExperts has launched a special offer to encourage clients to track these gentle giants. Goway is offering clients a free second gorilla permit (Worth $500USD) on a safari of 6 days or more valid for new bookings until December 31, 2009. In effect this money is being donated to the gorilla national parks for conservation and communities, thus increasing revenue for the gorilla parks. “Before I saw my first mountain gorilla he brushed my shoulder as he bounded from the canopy above and went somersaulting down the track behind me,” says Bruce Hodge, President of 39-year-old Goway. “There was another gorilla in the undergrowth to the left and one to the right and even more in the bamboo canopy above.“ The place was Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, East Africa the region where Dian Fossey became famous. “I feel privileged to be one of the very few travellers who have ever encountered mountain gorillas in their own habitat” continued Hodge.

Consider that in contrast to the six billion human beings living on our crowded planet, there are only some seven hundred mountain gorillas left. Goway’s AFRICAExperts offers travellers some programs where they can encounter gorillas up close. One is a 7 day ‘Gorillas, Wildlife & Chimps’ (http://www.goway.com/africa/uganda/gorillas-wildlife-chimps.html) which includes gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda and chimp trekking from $4434. Also on offer is the 3 or 4 day Mountain Gorilla Encounter in Rwanda from $2936CAD. Only 8 permits are issued each day in Rwanda to visit each of 5 families habituated for tourists, so early booking is essential if you want to join one of the few travellers to have encountered mountain gorillas in their own habitat.

MAGIC OF AFRICA

Goway’s premier 20 day fully escorted tour to Southern Africa is the ‘Magic of Africa’. It is one of only 6 fully escorted tours Goway operates and which have the special designation, ‘Holidays of a Lifetime’”.  It is also one of two escorted tours Goway features for Africa.
The regular departures of the ‘Magic of Africa’ feature air travel with South African Airways who fly directly from  North America to South Africa allowing for less jetlag than flying via Europe.

Visits to three different countries are included in the itinerary with South Africa being naturally the main feature. This destination is covered in depth with visits to Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route, Zululand, Swaziland and a game safari in Kruger National Park.  To enjoy a different perspective while on safari, there is a visit to Chobe National Park in Botswana followed by a grand finale in Zambia to view the spectacular Victoria Falls.

Southern Africa has such a diverse range of attractions that the interest level is continually rewarding.

What makes the ‘Magic of Africa’ a special tour? Not only does Goway really know Africa having been offering travel to this part of the world for a large number of years but included are additional features which are not usually found in other tours. An example is the Fun Themes which vary according to the departure such as Food and Wine, Geography and History, Lifestyles and Native Culture and Animal and Plant Life.

All tour departures include tipping; special dinners and Goway’s twin share guarantee a benefit for single travellers. Goway will match them with someone of the same sex avoiding the single room supplement. If this option is taken up and there is no one else wishing to share, a single room is provided at no additional cost. Additionally a quality Travel Companion booklet with a wealth of destination information and a souvenir group photograph at the end of the tour are provided.

Goway’s professional Tour Directors who accompany the groups from North America know Africa intimately having been there repeatedly.

Goway does not hesitate to call The ‘Magic of Africa’ the best escorted tour from North America to Southern Africa. Prices start from $10,849 per person sharing basis from Toronto. Prices from other Canadian cities available on request.

Night in a Treehouse adds Excitement to a Goway Safari

You don’t get much closer to nature than spending a night up a tree in the African bush, in the open with only a mosquito net between you and the stars above. Discerning guests at Lions Sands Private Game Reserve in South Africa can do just that.

Guy Aubrey Chalkley, an Irish-American immigrant, first founded a modest camp there on the banks of the Sabie River, which flows through Kruger National Park, in the early 1930s. Now his grandsons Nicholas and Robert More operate a 5-star luxury safari lodge in the same area and they have created Chalkley Treehouse and Jackalberry Treehouse to add a touch of excitement to their guests’ stay.

The treehouses consist of a wooden platform outfitted with the comforts a guest can expect at a luxurious lodge – a comfortable double bed, crisp linens, mosquito net, comfortable armchairs for game viewing, toilet, vanity table, gowns and slippers.

Chalkley Treehouse is built around a majestic, 500-year-old Leadwood Tree with views across the game-filled plains; Jackalberry is constructed high in a 100-year-old jackalberry tree and overlooks the Msutu dry river bed. They are 20 minutes drive from Lion Sands Lodge.

Guests are driven to the treehouses at dusk and served a champagne picnic dinner. They are then left alone to enjoy the African dusk and absorb the sounds and sights and the beauty of the bushveld night. They have lamps and a spotlight for picking out game in the bush below before turning in to sleep under the stars, safe and sound in their treetop aeries.

At dawn, guests are collected by the game ranger who looks after them throughout their visit and taken for a morning game drive that includes a delicious bush breakfast in one of the many bird and animal hides scattered through the reserve.

Goway AFRICAExperts offers free safari for children!

Goway’s AFRICAExperts has seen increased demand for families travelling together. ‘Taking children on safari could be one of the most memorable experiences of a lifetime’, states Moira Smith, General Manager of AFRICAExperts, ‘and while many game lodges have age restrictions, Goway has put together a brilliant four night family friendly deal where the first child under 12 stays free, the second child pays $380 CAD when sharing with their parents’.

Kwa Madwala, a 4,000-hectare managed ecosystem and private game reserve at the southern rim of South Africa’s famous Kruger National Park, is the only place in Africa to offer both elephant back and microlight safaris. Guests can also choose a traditional game drive in a 4WD vehicle with a ranger and a tracker in the early morning or late afternoon, or get closer to nature and learn about the flora and fauna of the region on a bush walk led by a ranger.

Other options available to guests are spectacular day or half-day drives into the Kruger Park. They can also take day trips to nearby Mozambique and to its capital, Maputo, to Swaziland, and to Matsamo Cultural Village. A minimum five-day stay is recommended and those travelling to South Africa with AFRICAExperts can enjoy an exclusive 4-night stay where the first child under the age of 12 stay free and second pays $380 CAD (http://goway.com/africa/southafrica/kwa-madwala-flexi-family.html) (http://goway.com/superspecials/canada/). This $uper$pecial includes airport transfers from Nelspruit airport, four nights accommodation, four game drives (including one in Kruger National Park), choice of an elephant-back safari or aerial safari, bush walk and elephant activities.

Politics Helps Tourism; Kenya Top of the List

Goway’s AFRICAExperts, one of North America’s leading companies for travel to Africa, is experiencing a major surge in bookings to Kenya. “These are unprecedented times for us,” stated Moira Smith, General Manager AFRICAExperts. “Certainly some of the interest can be attributed to the publicity that has been given to President Obama’s Kenyan roots. Whatever the reason it is great to see the growth in popularity for Kenya.”

In terms of visitor numbers, Kenya is somewhat of a “hidden gem”, attracting far fewer North Americans, compared to countries such as South Africa. “Kenya is a relatively compact destination, and in a little over a week, visitors may see the ‘Big Five’; Masai warriors; Mount Kenya and enjoy fabulous game drives,” continued Smith.

AFRICAExperts offers several tempting vacations including their popular 8-day Classic Kenya Safari starts from $2399 per person, and is currently available with savings of up to $730 on select departures.

Also on offer is the 14-day ‘Classic East Africa‘ safari with special pricing starting from $4999, which reflects savings of up to $1117 per person.
