South America is home to some of the world’s most famous natural and man made sites. It’s also just “down the road” with no major time changes or jet lag issues! Rather than wax lyrical about all the wonders, we have listed here 10 of the top spots in South America. This is why we believe Latin America is the place to travel to!
(In no particular order)
1. Galapagos Islands
Called the world’s greatest living laboratory, or the modern day Garden of Eden, this is where Darwin’s theory of evolution began to crystallize. Home to an in-depth range of wildlife that shows no fear of man, pristine beaches and crystal clear blue waters, the Galapagos is not only in the top 10 of Latin America destinations, but also of world places to visit.
2. Falkland Islands
Whether you are looking for adventure or seeking quieter pleasures, the Falklands are a great place to relax and unwind. From personal encounters of the wildlife kind, to wilderness trout fishing, hiking and self-exploration to guided tours of key cultural and historic sites we invite you to discover all the Falklands has on offer. The Falkland Islands are one of the last untouched wildlife wonders of the World. Unspoiled beaches, islands and cliffs provide a natural safe-haven for hundreds of species that have made the Falklands their home.
3. Amazon River
Reaching into Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and of course Brazil, the Amazon River system is almost as immense as the continent of South America itself. Piranha fishing, caiman spotting, village visits and river explorations all ensure the Amazon retains its mystique and magic.
4. Lake Titicaca
The highest navigable lake in the world and once thought to be the original location of the lost city of Atlantis, Lake Titicaca offers globetrotters a look at endemic Andean cultures, the famous read islands, as well as amazing panoramic views of the mighty Andes that border the eastern edges of the lake.
5. Atacama Desert
One of the driest regions in the world, the lack of water and greenery should not be off-putting to travelers looking to explore this region of northern Chile. With a kaleidoscope of earth tones, ancient weathered valleys, and othe nearby largest salt lake in the world (Uyuni), San Pedro de Atacama is a must for those seeking some of the most beautiful accommodation choices in South America.
6. Andes Mountain Range
The only “growing” mountain range in the world, the Andes stretch from the top of the Caribbean coast on the shores of Colombia, and fall off into the sea at the world’s most southern city of Ushuaia in Argentina. Many of Goway’s trips revolve around the Andes and it is a feature of trips into Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
7. Lakes District Patagonia
The thousands of lakes fed by the Andean Glaciers give this region of central Chile the very apt name of “The Lakes District”. Very similar in look and feel to the English Lakes District, this area is home to hot springs, trekking, horse back riding, great golf courses, rafting, mountain biking and general relaxation with views to die for.
8. Patagonia
One of the world’s most famous outdoor playgrounds, Patagonia is home to Torres del Paine National Park, the Calafate glacier, Southern Patagonia cruises and the southern most city in the world – Ushuaia, Argentina.
9. Machu Picchu
The name almost sells itself, but nothing comes close to the feeling of standing in the shadow of this world famous site. Perched high in the Andean mountain range with the river below feeding the Amazon River, Machu Picchu to this day is clouded in mystery and wonder and is often the first port of a call on any trip to South America.
10. Iguassu Falls
We included the highest falls in the world – Angel Falls Venezuela – and we also include the largest waterfall system in the world. Straddling 3 countries – Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay – the falls take two full days to see properly. Options of power boat rides to the base of the falls and helicopter flights over the falls all help put into perspective the size, grandeur and power of what can be honestly described as jaw dropping sites and sounds.
